Working for one of the largest fleet management companies in the uk, I was responsible for finances including the monthly motor trade insurance. I was continually looking to save money at home and also for the company.

As you can imagine, one of our biggest expenses was the monthly motor trade insurance as we had so many cars to insure. This was my biggest challenge, to try to bring down the price of this as I was told we had the best possible price already and I so loved a challenge.

I decided to dedicate some time to getting the premiums down and diverted all my calls to my assistant and I set to it.

Firstly, I tried the online site to gain lots of quotes but have found that if you then contact the company direct online you normally get it down a little more. The main problem wasbecause we wanted monthly motor trade insurance, they seem to be a little extra on top of your original quote. So now it was time for my haggling skills.

I picked five companies that all had respectable quotes to start with and rang the first one. I explained that I wanted to pay monthly but wanted the best deal they could possibly do, I worked for a large company who spends quite a bit and gave her the usual spiel about our company. She came back with a price lower than the original quote and I took her telephone number. i explained that I needed to check with my manager but would get back to her. And so, I moved on to number 2.

I did this for all five of the companies that I had picked and haggled with each one to reduce costs more than I had already been quoted. our of them did this, but one said that they had already given their best quote and couldn't help any more.

By the time I had finished, i had saved the company over £750 on insurance and couldn't wait to tell my general manager. We had a meeting every Thursday anyway so I waited and announced in my meeting that the monthly motor trade insurance had been reduced by over £60 per month and that overall I had saved over £750 on this one account already. My boss was really impressed and I got a nice bonus in my wages that month.
